The 2018 season marks Coach Hoener's eighth season at the helm of the women's soccer program and 18th year overall at the University. Hoener served as Fontbonne men's soccer head coach from 2000-2010 and was the head coach of both programs from 2011-2014. He has since served as the head women's coach and assistant men's coach, making 2017 his 22nd head coaching season.
In 2017, the Griffins met-up with Webster for the second straight year at the SLIAC Tournament Championship game. The Griffins fell 1-0 and ended the season 11-10 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
In 2016, the Griffins advanced to the SLIAC Tournament Championship game for the first time since 1996. Fontbonne came up a goal short but the Griffins finished the season with a 12-7-2 overall record and just one conference loss (8-1).
In 2015 he achieved his 200th career win and is Fontbonne's winningest coach of both soccer programs. The women's soccer program has achieved many record-setting moments under Hoener's guidance. He has been named SLIAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year three times (2012, 2014, 2016) in his short six-year stint. Hoener took Fontbonne women's soccer to the SLIAC Tournament each of his first four years as head coach, narrowly missing a tough 2015 conference tournament bid. In just his second season with the women, Coach Hoener led the Griffins to the program's first regular season SLIAC championship in 2012. He is 63-47-9 as the women's head coach.
Coach Hoener has led Fontbonne to a total of four St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular season championships (2003, 2004, 2008), two SLIAC Tournament Championships (2004 & 2006) and three appearances in the NCAA Division III National Tournament (2003, 2004, 2006) for the men. His men's coaching record at Fontbonne is 155-107-33.
Hoener has been selected as the SLIAC Men's Coach of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2013. Under Hoener’s leadership, Fontbonne men's soccer team qualified for the SLIAC Tournament in each of his last 12 seasons at the helm.
Coach Hoener is a graduate of Fontbonne University and played two seasons with the Griffins. He attended Lewis & Clark Community College prior to transferring to Fontbonne. He graduated and played high school soccer at McCluer North High School. Coach Hoener also serves as Fontbonne’s assistant men's soccer coach.
