Tough volleyball conference-opener loss
St. Louis- Tonight Fontbonne volleyball lost to conference foe Principia College in three sets 23-25, 18-25 and 17-25. Fontbonne is now 0-1 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conferece (SLIAC) play and 2-6 overall. Principia advances to 1-0 in the SLIAC and 5-4 overall.
Fans rallied behind the Griffins during the first set to help them get to 20 first, but Principia wasn't finished. The Panthers rallied back. Just when Fontbonne fans had almost given up hope, senior Olivia Thurmond served up three straight points making the score 23-24. Principia would finish off the set with the win.
On the night, freshman Mandy DeWitt recorded 21 assists and Thurmond led the team in digs with 22. Junior Abbie Bergtholdt finished the night with 11 kills.
Fontbonne stays at home this weekend for three conference matches. First up is Spalding University on Friday at 7pm. On Saturday, the Griffins take on the Eureka Red Devils at 11am followed by the MacMurray Highlanders at 1pm.
