Fontbonne women's volleyball opens season with losses
St. Louis, MO- Opening weekend for the 2012 Fontbonne women's volleyball team didn't turn out quite how they had envisioned, despite several new key players. Several new aspects have found their way back to Fontbonne volleyball: team charisma, player enthusiasm, and not to mention what appears to be a solid fan base this year. It's a whole different team outlook and Griffin fans are showing their appreciation.
The Griffins are 0-3 on the season and have one more match to play before entering St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play next Saturday against Eureka.
On Friday the Griffins fell to neighboring Washington University Bears in three straight sets, 13-25, 15-25 and 15-25.
Fontbonne played their first home matches today against Benedictine University and Missouri Valley College. Despite making a comeback in the third set, Fontbonne loses their home opener to Benedictine 15-25, 11-25 and 21-25. Junior transfer Taryn Ballmann showed her athleticism on the court today, leading the team in kills against the Eagles.
The Griffins lost to Missouri Valley College too, but kept fans on the edge of their seats. Having lost the first two sets 15-25 and 13-25, fans were pretty excited with the Griffns in their continued efforts in the third set. Tied at 19, Griffin fans soon found their team on top 23-20, and both players and fans alike were caught up in the moment. Fontbonne almost nudged out their first win of the match but the Vikings held on to win the final set 24-26.
Fontbonne volleyball returns to the court at Monmouth College on Friday, September 6 at 7:00 pm.
