Pierce nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year Award
Fontbonne University recent graduate Mary Alice Pierce has been
nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year. The NCAA Woman of the Year
award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled
in academics, athletics, leadership and community service.
Pierce was a standout student-athlete receiving honors upon
graduation, named Outstanding Social Work Student, given the CSJ
award, was captain of the lacrosse team where she was named MVP,
received the Griffin Award and set multiple lacrosse records this
past season. She was also selected to the MWLC 1st-Team
All-Conference as a lacrosse midfielder, received the Most Improved
Award in tennis, and she was awarded the highest athletic award at
Fontbonne: the Meneve Dunham Award.
In addition, to her athletic and academic honors, Pierce was
also the Fontbonne In-Service and Humility (FISH) President (which
received Outstanding Service Organization Award), Student Athletic
Advisory Committee (SAAC) President, volunteered during the Joplin
Service Trip, worked aftercare at the St. Michael School of
Clayton, and completed respite care for two different families
through the year.
Pierce was one of 429 individuals nominated by NCAA schools
throughout the nation. Each conference nominated one or two young
women as their honoree. Pierce has since been selected as the
Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference honoree. The conference
honorees' names are sent to the Woman of the Year selection
committee, which chooses the top 10 honorees in each division.
These names will be announced in early September. Next the top
three in each division are announced and finally members of the
NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will vote from among the nine
finalists to determine the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year.
Progress for the award can be found on the NCAA website.
The 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced during an awards
dinner Sunday, October 14 in Indianapolis.
