Softball’s Strong Defense Seals the Deal in Win against Webster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Fontbonne University softball team shuts out Webster in a Conference rematch.

It was a low-scoring affair in a rematch against the Webster University Gorlocks. The first inning was quiet offensively as the Gorlocks sat down the first three batters for the Griffins. Fontbonne's defense answered back, with a three-up, three-down effort in the bottom of the first, 0-0.

Hannah Miener led it off with a double to right field. Lexi Becker singled, advancing Miener to third, and stealing second base. Grace Harlin doubled to left field, earning an RBI as Miener scored. Sam Foppe reached on a fielder's choice, moving Harlin to third, but Becker was thrown out at home. Logan Darrow singled to left field, scoring Harlin, 2-0. The Griffin's defense was solid again in the bottom of the second inning, getting three quick outs to keep the lead, 2-0.

Webster had a chance to score was in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, the Gorlock's batter lined into a double play, ending the inning and stranding the runners.

In the top of the sixth, Allysa Ibarra singled to the shortstop to start off the inning. Abby Alonzo doubled to left field, advancing Ibarra to third. Hannah Miener reached on a fielder's choice, but Ibarra was thrown out at home. The Griffins strand two runners of their own to keep the score at 2-0.

The Gorlocks had one more chance to score in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on second and third and one out, the Griffin's defense came up big again forcing the last two outs and earning the win, 2-0.

Strong pitching and defense stole the show as Sam Foppe earned her third win in the circle, only allowing two hits in 4.1 innings.
