ST. LOUIS, Mo.— Fontbonne University head men's volleyball coach, Mike Haston, has announced his resignation to become the new head men's volleyball coach at Maryville University. Current women's volleyball head coach and men's assistant, Ryan LeGrand, has been named the new head coach.
"I am very grateful for all the work that Coach Haston has done as a part-time head coach in a conference that demands high performance and a great amount of travel," said Director of Athletics Maria Buckel. "He has taken the program to new heights during his tenure."
Buckel added, "I am excited to have Coach LeGrand leading both volleyball programs. Coach LeGrand is committed to continuing to build upon past success of the men's volleyball program and I look forward to the future of both programs under his leadership."
Under the guidance of Haston, the Griffins totaled 66 wins, including posting a program-best 19 wins last season. In his final three years, the team compiled a record of 51-29.
"To all the alumni, students, faculty, friends, and family that make up Griffin Nation, it is with mixed emotions that I'm informing you that I'm resigning from the position of Head Men's Volleyball Coach here at Fontbonne," said Haston. "I've been on the staff here my entire adult life, working my way up from volunteer assistant, to paid assistant, all the way to what would've been my seventh year as the head coach."
He continued, "In my time I've seen this program grow from a team with just six guys into the conference-contending, healthy program it is today. This transformation is something for which I'm extremely proud of. However, the most important memories of my time at Fontbonne are derived from the long lasting relationships that I've formed with the incredible people I've had the pleasure of coaching and working with. As I leave Fontbonne, I've accepted a new position as the Head Men's Volleyball Coach at Maryville University, in which I'll be tasked in founding the program - set to compete in NCAA Division I, starting in 2021."
"I was very happy and honored to be named the next head coach of the men's volleyball program at Fontbonne," said LeGrand. "I've been the assistant coach for the last six years and now I'll have the opportunity to take over the program and to continue the mission that was started with Coach Haston."
He continued, "I want to wish Coach Haston the best of luck at Maryville. We will continue to work hard to achieve our goals and build off last year's program-record success."
