The Fontbonne Univesity men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker last night losing to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) 2-1 in double overtime. The Griffins fell to 3-3-1 while RHIT improved to 3-1-2.
RHIT got on the board first scoring in the sixth minute after a failed clearance by the Griffins. Fontbonne however responded by scoring in the 26th minute off a corner kick to tie the score at 1-1. Senior Zach Schucardt headed home a perfectly driven corner by senior Justin Williams.
Both teams struggled for clear cut scoring chances for the remainder of the game until an RHIT forward converted a wide open shot from in front of the goal in the second overtime for the win. Fontbonne outshot RHIT 12-11 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Griffins will return to the pitch Friday when they play Coe College at 4 pm at St. Louis Soccer Park.
