April 30, 2012 - The Fontbonne University men's lacrosse team concluded their 2012 season in dramatic fashion yesterday defeating Trine University in the closing seconds of the game.
The Griffins prevailed 9-8 to finish 8-8 on the season and 4-5 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference. Fontbonne's eight victories sets a new program record for most wins in a season.
After trailing 5-3 at halftime, the Griffins rattled off four unanswered goals in the third quarter to take a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Trine answered by scoring three straight goals to open the fourth quarter and take a 8-7 lead.
With just 1:54 remaining in the game, Fontbonne's Adam Walker scored his third goal of the game to tie the score at 8-8. Griffin junior Colin Benencke would end up on the other end of that counterattack putting a shot past the Trine goalie with just five seconds to go in the game to give Fontbonne the victory.
