Griffins Tabbed 6th in Pre-Season Coaches Poll
St. Louis- The Fontbonne University men's basketball team has been picked to finish in sixth place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) according to the coaches pre-season poll. Spalding University was tabbed as the pre-season favorite to win the conference.
The Griffins finished 8-17 last season with a 6-10 SLIAC record, improving from the 11-12 season. Fontbonne returns 2013 SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, sophomore forward Jared Greenlee. Greenlee averaged 10.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season while shooting 52-percent from the field. Also back are guards Greg Gentry and Blake Welch. Welch averaged 10.3 points per game and was third in the conference in three-point shooting.
Fontbonne fans saw talent and potential growth in possible starters from first year players when the Griffins took on the St. Louis Billikins in an exhibition game earlier this season. The Griffins open regular season play this weekend in a WashU/Fontbonne classic. Saturday Fontbonne plays against Hendrix (at Washington U at 4pm) and Sunday hosts Rhodes at 4pm.
