Westminster battles back in the ninth to send Griffins home
St. Louis- Fontbonne University baseball saw their conference tournament championship hopes fall in the bottom of the 9th inning as Westminster tallied two runs to win the game.
Fontbonne took a 2-0 lead in the third and both teams scored in the fourth as the Griffins had the edge 3-1. Westminster scored in the fifth on an error and both teams scored again in the eighth, with Fontbonne leading 4-3. A scoreless top inning in the ninth, the Blue Jays rallied to score two with a triple and an error to end the game, winning 5-4, and proceeding onto the next round.
Fontbonne recorded five errors in the game as Drew Schlereth suffered the loss.
The Griffins (#4) previously fell to #1 seeded Webster yesterday. Third inning woes allowed Webster to take a 3-0 lead in the third, adding five more runs by the end of the end of the fifth inning.
Fontbonne's bats came alive in the sixth, and along with a Gorlok error, the Griffins cut the lead to 8-5.
Webster would score six more runs in the eighth to secure a 14-5 victory.
Fontbonne ends their season with a 18-24 overall record and 14-10 SLIAC record.
