Webster hands Griffins first conference loss

Fenton, Mo. - The two women's soccer teams with undefeated conference records met this evening with Webster prevailing in the Griffins' 2-1 loss. Fontbonne is now 10-6-1 on the year and 6-1 in SLIAC play. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Griffins. Webster has now won seven of their last nine games.

Fontbonne's offense struggled against the Gorloks with the Griffins mustering just four shots compared to Webster's 23. Each team scored from a corner kick opportunity in the first half before Webster punched the game winning goal with 2:40 left in the game.

For Fontbonne, Jacey Pate netted her eighth goal of the season on an assist from Katie Sportsman. Senior Tayler Pulvirenti saved 10 in net for Fontbonne.

Fontbonne and Spalding are each 6-1 in conference play, tied for second in the SLIAC standings, but the Griffins defeated the Golden Eagles this season 1-0, for the head to head advantage. Fontbonne is fighting for a top spot in the SLIAC to host the first round of the SLIAC Tournament on Wednesday, November 2nd. Spalding will take on Webster next Tuesday before hosting Iowa Wesleyan next Saturday.

The Griffins host their final two regular season games at home this week, taking on Westminster on Tuesday, October 25th at 6 p.m. followed by Principia College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 29th. Before Westminster's game, the Griffins will honor outgoing senior Heather Wiegmann who is unable to attend the game against Principia.
