St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's soccer battled through a rough and rainy night against No. 11-ranked Calvin College. The Griffins fell 1-0 after the Knights scored in the 56th minute on Francis Field at Washington University.
Administration tried to avoid any delays by moving the start time up to 7:45pm, originally from 8:30pm, but it was inevitable. The Griffins and Knights were to begin around 8:30pm anyway after the Washington University/Aurora contest ran late, but a lightning flash before warmups began stalled play for the nightcap immediately. As soon as the game started around 9:00, rain came down steadily until the two teams were forced off the field with 11 minutes to go in the first half due to lightning once again.
After a scoreless first half and short five minute halftime, the two teams came out hard as the rain slowed down to a drizzle for the second half of the game. After notching a goal in the 56th minute, Calvin threatened again in the 59th, but Fontbonne senior goalkeeper Tayler Pulvirenti slid to contain the ball and eliminate the threat. The Knights crossed the ball right in front of the goal in the 64th minute but the ball evaded all field players.
Meredith Wendt had a great look just three minutes later after the Griffins took a free kick. Wendt was in the middle of a scrum when her shot bounced off to the right of Calvin's goalkeeper. Fontbonne received a corner kick opportunity with one minute left in the game but couldn't capitalize.
Calvin finished with a 14-7 shot advantage while Pulvirenti saved five in net for Fontbonne. The Griffins fall to 1-3 on the season and host Aurora University Saturday, Sept. 10th at 6 p.m.
