Bio

Mike Akers stepped down as associate head softball coach when head coach Bill Rosner retired after the 2016 season. He has stayed on staff as a voluntary coach and will continue to work with outfielders and hitters and will be the familiar face in the dugout.

Akers was hired as an assistant softball coach at Fontbonne University in the summer of 2008 and became Associate Head coach in 2009, which he held for eight years. In 2015 the Griffins went 30-11, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive year.

With Rosner, Akers has compiled a 222-99 record at the helm of Fontbonne softball with two conference shutout seasons over a 116-11 SLIAC record. During that time span, Fontbonne produced four All-American's, 11 All-Region players who have garnered 19 accolades, six SLIAC Tournament MVP's, 29 SLIAC All-Conference recipients that have accumulated 63 All-Conference awards, five SLIAC Newcomers of the Year, three Pitcher's of the Year for four awards and two Player's of the Year for three winnings. The coaching staff won three SLIAC Coach of the Year awards as well.

Akers and head coach Bill Rosner coached their 100th win on May 2, 2012 and their 200th on March 22, 2016. Akers brings more than 14 years of coaching/managing select softball experience to Fontbonne. Akers co-founded the St. Louis Fusion Softball Association, which fields teams in several age groups.

Coach Akers has an associate degree in accounting from Meramec Community College. He lives in Wildwood with his wife Kris and has two daughters Dhani and Alyssa.
