ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team made it three wins in a row on Saturday as they defeated Blackburn, 5-0 on Senior Day.
It was another dominant performance all around by FBU (9-4-1; 4-1 SLIAC) as they outshot the Beavers 28-7. Nick Wolf, Blake Smugala, Corey Schmidt, Michael Flynn-Carr and Ian Schweiger all scored, while in net, the trio of Pitaro, Alberici and Alfonzo Sanchez-Seleme combined for the shutout victory.
Blackburn (3-10-1; 0-5 SLIAC), couldn't get much going offensively, while in net, Alex Hammerlinck made a game-high 11 saves.
In the first half, the Griffins outshot Blackburn 7-0 before they were able to strike through. In the 29th minute, Smugala crossed a perfect ball onto the head of Wolf and he buried his shot into the back of the net, making it a 1-0 game.
Then in the 37th minute, the Griffins were awarded a corner kick. Schmidt found a cutting Smugala on the far post and he headed in his attempt to give them a 2-0 advantage at the break.
It continued to be the same story in the second half with Fontbonne keeping the ball on the Beavers side of the field. At 62:37 a foul was called on Blackburn just outside the box. Schmidt stepped into it and beat Hammerlinck just inside the post, extending the teams lead out to 3-0.
Michael Flynn-Carr netted his first goal on the season at 65:40. FBU was awarded a penalty kick after slide tackle by Hammerlinck that tripped up an FBU player. Flynn-Carr took advantage of it and scored his first of his career to give them a 4-0 lead.
The team tacked on one more in the 77th minute as Schweiger blasted in his shot from 25 yards out, making it a 5-0 final.
The Griffins return to the pitch next Wednesday in a tough showdown against Westminster. Kick-off from Fulton, Missouri, starts at 5 p.m.
