GREENVILLE, Ill.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team picked up win No. 8 on the season with a 2-1 victory over Greenville.
The Griffins (8-4-1; 3-1 SLIAC), totaled 26 shots in the outing. Nick Wolf led them in the shot department with five, while the duo of Andres Castro and Greg Ferry netted the goals on the night. Corey Schmidt also played a factor with each one having two assists.
In net, Jordan Alberici stayed perfect and tied its career-high with his seventh win after making three saves.
Greenville (6-8), meanwhile, was held to just 10 shots, while Edgar Bueno scored the lone goal off a penalty kick. In goal, Michael Gonzalez did what he could after making seven saves.
It was back-and-forth play throughout the first half as the Griffins owned a shot advantage of 7-4 through the first 28:00 minutes of play. Then, after its constant pressure, they finally broke through in the 29th minute as Schmidt found Castro and he scored his second on the year to make it 1-0.
FBU's offensive pressure continued over the next eight minutes. Then, in the 37th minute, Schmidt tacked on his fifth assist on the year as Ferry scored to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Greenville picked up its pressure and they eventually cut the deficit down in the 64th minute. A foul was called on the Griffins in the box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Panthers. Bueno stepped into it and found the back of the net, narrowing it down to a 2-1 game.
The Griffins, however, were able to regroup as they outshot Greenville 8-0 before the home team finally got its next scoring chance in the 81st minute. FBU played well the rest of the way and they hung on for the one goal win.
The team will be back at it this Saturday on Senior Day at home against Blackburn. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
