Greenville, Ill. - Fontbonne University men's basketball has suffered their fourth consecutive loss with tonight's downfall at Greenville College. The Griffins suffered a 142-99 loss against "the system" and fall to 1-7 on the year.
Fontbonne scored six points in a row to lead 10-3 until Greenville roared back and after two consecutive three-pointers gave them a 17-15 advantage. Fontbonne tied the game 29-29 with 8:24 left in the first half when Greenville scored three treys in a row to lead 38-31. The Panthers scored 17 points in a row as they finished the first half with a 57-37 lead. Greenville then outscored the Griffins by 30 points in the second half as they propelled themselves to an 8-2 overall record.
Senior Orkan Bakis recorded a season-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Bakis made seven of his 13 shot attempts including two treys.
Fellow senior Kody Ettinger was lights out off the bench, recording 17 points in 15 minutes of action. The Cuba, Mo. native made all three three-point attempts as well as all four free throws. He missed just two of three jumpers in the field while also grabbing five rebounds.
Also recording double digits were James Wiggins (11), Kris McCann, (11) and freshman Zac Ridenhour (10). It's a career-high for Ridenhour who went four-for-five in the field with two free throws. McCann drained three of his five three-point attempts.
Senior Dallas Haywood ventured out and recorded nine rebounds, eight points and a career-high seven assists.
Fontbonne finished with 10 three pointers in the contest, and shot witha season-best 55.6% accuracy behind the arc, higher than Greenville's average (34.8%) and shot 46.2% overall, slightly higher than the hosts' 45.7% accuracy. Greenville however notched 23 treys. Fontbonne's 64-50 rebounding advantage was negated by their 41 turnovers, off which Greenville scored 59 points.
Fontbonne is at Illinois Eastern on Monday with a 7 p.m. scheduled tipoff. The Griffins return home on January 7th when they take on Principia College at 3 p.m.
