Griffins extend winning streak to eight games
April 9, 2012 - The Fontbonne University men's baseball team extended their winning streak to eight games over the weekend sweeping a three-game series from Eureka College. The Griffins improved to 11-13 overall and 8-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In the first game, Fontbonne freshman designated hitter Joe Layton went 3-3 from the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored to propel the Griffins to a 8-1 win. Griffin sophomore Jacob Becker threw seven innings allowing just four hits and one earned run to pick up the victory. Becker also struck out seven.
In the second game, Fontbonne took advantage of some timely Eureka miscues to earn a 3-2 victory. The Griffins mustered just one hit but took advantage of two Eureka errors to score their three runs. On the mound Griffin junior Andrew Schlereth kept Fontbonne in the game by allowing just four hits and two earned runs in six innings. Schlereth, who struck out eight, earned the victory while Curtis Hansen picked up the save.
In the series finale, Fontbonne junior Sean Fischer hit a walk-off single scoring junior Zach Will to earn a 6-5 victory. Despite Fischer's heroics, Will was the offensive star for the Griffins going 4-4 from the plate with three RBI's and three runs scored.
The Griffins return to the diamond on Tuesday as they travel to Greenville, Illinois for a doubleheader with Greenville College. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 5 pm.
