Before you come on your campus visit, I want to inform you that Fontbonne University is currently completing two years of probation pursuant to an agreement reached with the NCAA in April 2011. During the probation, Fontbonne is required to comply with NCAA rules to the same extent as any other Division III school. Probation will have no bearing on your ability to pursue an education with Fontbonne or on your ability to compete in Division III athletics at Fontbonne. There is no restriction on current or future participation in the Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SLIAC) or Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) or Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) or Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) or NCAA sports or championship play.
Fontbonne agreed to the probation because Fontbonne mistakenly considered high school athletic participation as one of many factors for eligibility for a particular scholarship. Fontbonne also made a mistake by permitting two coaches to initially rate students for eligibility for scholarships.
It was never our intent to violate any NCAA rules. Once these violations came to our attention, we immediately — and voluntarily — reviewed our processes and made the necessary changes. We are confident that we will complete the probation without difficulty and are committed to that task.
Once again, probation will not impact your experience as a student-athlete. You will have the same opportunity to compete in NCAA championships. Know that our staff is working to make your student-athlete experience the best that it can be. If you have any questions at all regarding this probation, please don’t hesitate to contact our Director of Athletics, Maria Eftink. We look forward to having you on campus for your visit.
